Matthew 26:60 “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, “He deserves death.”
Jesus is sentenced to death for blashemy - for claiming to be God. Listen to what he was saying: "from now on you will see me seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Study note: If Jesus is lying by claiming to be divine, then indeed he deserves death from the standpoint of the Jewish law (Leviticus 24:10-23).
This reminds me of my favorite quote by CS Lewis regarding His claim to divinity which was so shocking and offensive to audiences then and today: “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
So as Jesus was dying on the cross, there was darkness all over the land from the sixth to the ninth hour (noon to 3pm). That would be clue #1. Imagine experiencing that. Then, after he breathed his last, "the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom". Symbolic. "The earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
